Hobart Town, Derwent River,
Van Dieman's Land, 20th July, 1804

Sir,

I have much Pleasure in addressing you from this Part of the World, in which I established this Settlement, with the Governments of which I had been honoured, on the 20th of last February.  I did not write you Sir from Port Phillip, for there I met with nothing but Disappointment;  here however every thing were a more promising Aspect, and I hope to answer the View of Government in forming a Settlement in this Part of New Holland.

I was landed here very early for five Months, with little more than half my People, Provisions and Stores, yet I have got about 24 Acres in Grain of different Sorts, and 4 Acres cleared for a Garden adjoining to my little Town, which is now ready for the Plants & Seeds, you were so kind to assure me I might expect by the first Ship.

I have not heard any thing from England since I sailed, which I ascribe to the War, which I learn from Port Jackson took place soon after our Departure.  I well

Rt. Honble Sir Joseph Banks.
