I never gave you any expectation of being employed in collecting for his Majesty's Garden how therefore you came to understand that you were, is more than I can tell if you had any encouragement on that subject some one else must have given it to you.
I made a point at all times of telling you the terms on which you chose to engage yourself & Leaving it to your discretion what to do all I ever promised was to write to Governor Philip concerning you which Promise I shall keep as I told you I would when I last saw you & I have no doubt he will grant you proper indulgence.
As the King is to Fund you in Provisions &c I Conclude your wages will more than afford you all the necessaries you can want in a Place where neatness of dress is all that can be wanted if you choose to accept £20 a year for collecting seeds & specimens for me & taking care of these the Governor may have collected & pack them properly &c. I am ready to engage with you but it is on condition that you do not collect and gather seeds or specimens for any other person.
