Cape of Good Hope

30th June 1811

My dear Sir

Lord Caledon having been so kind as to offer me to be the Bearer of a Letter, I cannot let slip so favorable an opportunity of writing to you.  His Lordship will himself inform you how he has left us all here.  I assure you it is a great Loss to the Colony & to every Individual to lose such a Governor who had the Welfare of the Colony at Heart, who gave the most perfect Satisfaction to all Parties, and who leaves this Settlement with the Regret and sincere Wishes of every Inhabitant for his future Prosperity & Happiness.  You know my Friend I have the Liberty of judging on this point, having served under so many different Governors.  His Lordship
