August 14th 1804                                                                                                             New South Wales Port Jackson

Sir       
I have taken the Liberty of Addressing you.  I was Governor Phillips Gardener During [h]is stay here - I see that Government is at a Great Expence in sending out Collectors To this Country I have spoke to the Governor and the Commesary And they Advised me to Write to you as when they Come to the Country they cannot do without me for I have Been here A Number of years and have made it my Chief Study.  I have been to the Blue Mountains and every Part their is In this Country their is the finest and most beautiful plants you ever see there is a great quantity of Bulberous Roots and Anual Plants there is such you neaver see in England it is a fine flourishing Country and a many Curiositys in it.  Our animals is the Kangaroo and Native Dog of the Woolf Kind Possems an Pellican - the Birds is the Hamen that will wey [weigh] from fifty to sixty, Geese Teel and a great quantity of Beautiful Parrots.  The Black Swan is Reckoned a great Curiosity Black & White Cockatoes and a great Number of Small Birds - very Handsom  - our Summer is your Winter and Everything is Reversed our Harvest is at Christmas and A very Plentifull one Weat Runs from on to a Hundred and Sixty Bushel per Acre. Indian Corn and Barley quite equal, all European fruits Thrive here.  We have apples that Bares Twice a year.  The Country it Selfe Produses no fruit But there is Trees that Bares [bears] Wooden Apples pairs & Plumbs.  I have Made Several Collections and Whoud have sent them be [but] the Capt Whould not take them without I [h]ad Something from under your Hand to Secure the freight of them.  I Did apply to Governor Gross & Governor Hunter but they told me they Could not Compel any Capt to take them.
