Sir 

Altho I have not the pleasure of being personally acquainted with you, I feel no hesitation in addressing you on the present occasion.  You have of course long ere this been made acquainted with the safe arrival of his Majesty's Ship Providence & Brig Assistant with the Bread Fruit Plants from the South Sea Islands.  The munificence display'd by his Majesty in the prosecution of this Voyage; the liberality of judgement of those who were the advisers & the care & attention manifested by those who were more immediately entrusted with the management of it, are circumstances which can never be forgotten & in my opinion form a very important [Era?] in the history of the British West India Colonies.

After the Bustle naturally excited, to see the Bread Fruit Plants & to participate in the distribution of them, had a little subsided, it was thought necessary to pay some attention to the collection of St  Vincent Plants on Board & fix a plan for collecting such of our native plants as might be thought acceptable; with regard to the former it was thought advisable that they should be brought on Shore, this was effected
