Sir,
As you mean soon to proceed on a second voyage, I beg leave to offer my service to you, as a person capable of properly transcribing fit for the press the observations you will doubtless make during your absence.
I spell with justness and accuracy; am capable of correcting a slight error, should one escape you; and of my hand this letter is a specimen. The reason I offer myself for such a task, is because I have had some experience that way, and believe by proof I should give satisfaction. But, Sir, if you have already engaged one for that business I would willingly except of any other low post that may be vacant, and if any particular qualifications are requisite to fill it, by strict application I would endeavour to attain them. But being by my present employment greatly confined, and prevented from paying due attendance, I am compeled to entreat you to signify by a line, whether you have occasion for me, or not: This, Sir, I am conscious is a bold request but I hope your humility will pardon it.
