As nothing but my present Situation could be pleaded as an Excuse for my taking this Liberty with a Gentleman to whom I am an entire Stranger; I must therefore throw myself wholly on your Candor & Generosity, not doubting but you will entertain the most favorable Opinion of my Conduct, which the Case will allow.
I am a young Man of about 22; have had a liberal Education & if I am not flattered by my Friends, have a tolerable Genius. I am now in Lord Weymouth`s Office in the Capacity of a Clerk; in which Station I have had the Honor to serve his Lordship upwards of 8 years, and have given the greatest Satisfaction. I am chiefly employed in Writing having the Accounts to keep of several Thousands a year: I know something of the Mathematics & I flatter myself understand the practical parts of Land Surveying with a Theodolite or otherwise, as well as most at my Years, having every Instrument of my own, proper for the purpose.
I have not much leisure Time, but what little I have, I have chiefly devoted to the Study of Botany: a Science of which I am remarkably fond & in which by the kind Assistance of Lady Weymouth (who is a great proficient therein) I have made a tolerable Progress.
I am sensible I shall be justly charged with Vanity in saying so much of myself but it would have been imprudent in the present Case to have said less, as I am confident you would upon Enquiry find, I have not exceeded the Truth.
