Open-air Oyster Saloons
Aborigines of old days seem to
have gathered at certain spots for
years for oyster feasts, at times car-
rying loads of [?] consider-
able distances to the banqueting
ground. On the banks of Pambula
River there were piles of shells 10ft.
deep, and the immense store was con-
verted by local farmers into lime for
enriching their cultivation paddocks.
These spots may have been old camp-
ing grounds; but at Ballina, Rich-
mond River (N.S.W.), there were simi-
lar huge heaps where an aboriginal
village would not be located. This
place was called Boolina by the
blacks, which means "place of oys-
ters."-Cooramin.
