Where once were villages & forests there is now nothing but a few bricks (& very few at that) & the trunks of a few trees, not a leaf or vestige of anything else being left. The country is just one mass of huge shell holes & these are continually bursting still day & night. One of the worst features of this business is the lack of water as it has to be carted up to us at night, so you can imagine that we do not get a wash too often. We only stop in the firing line for 10 or 12 days at a stretch & then go out for a few days so-called rest, though most of that time is taken up in
