high & the trees in the surrounding avenues below mars the view, as these trees are ancient & lofty. At one point on north west corner the trees open & a glorious view is obtained of surrounding hills here & their covered with isolated clumps of trees.
In winter these trees would be leafless & the panorama would balance the loss of the shady retreats. The day is very hot but underneath these trees lofty & cool the shaded walk are filled with a cooling breeze & the air itself is full of the song of myriad of birds who have found these pleasant parts.
The Church of Notre Dame is in the Italian style The roof is doubled the lower one having huge semicircles & the upper painted group above these semicircles gives the idea of a glimpse into Heaven. The decoration is all in a silver grey. The dome is closed till 2 pm but I do not wait. The Palais de Justice, Hotel de Ville are beautiful building whose beauty is robbed by the narrow streets which are so hot & sultry that I again seek the ramparts.
I then set off to visit the Colonne de la Grande Armee & ask a Frenchman who instead of merely directing me he accompanies me & makes interesting conversation to pass the time unlike an Englishman
