4th July
Orders were rcvd to be ready to move and we started out on the road at 10 am. We understood our destination was be near Armentaires [Armentieres]. We passed through village after village until we came to Sailly and here we witnessed the havoc wrought by those Germans - Those grand old Flemish churches for which France is noted suffered very badly at the hands of the German guns - Many walls were spattered with bullet holes. After a halt being made on the road we met a guide and then went to a farm house in the valley. It was an orchard where we placed our horses &
