Dear Sir
Mr Horne has no doubt told you that my Right hand is so lame by the Gout as to render me unable to write, thus I must request you to accept my apology for using another persons hand.
Your message received by him this morning respecting the McQuarries of the Islands of the West spread over my mind a kind of pleasure I can scarcely describe that the Chieftain to whose hospitalities I was indebted to when I had need of them & whose kindness to me was without bounds or measure still survives & still remembers the stranger whom he so long ago received is a source of no small consolation to my sick bed, but it is an agravation also must confess my disease is agravated by the recollection that but for this gout I should otherwise no doubt had the pleasure of a personal interview wt. you which I am now unable to claim.
