Mr Aiton has written to you & told you the Particulars of your affairs here I need only say that we are well satisfied with your proceedings Kew Garden being testimony to your success with many fine Plants
The azalea indica you have often sent us has sometimes shewn signs of life after its arrival but has always died be so good as to be very attentive to send us more
If you try to cut these plants in vain after the Fall of the Leaf & prevent them from making many shoots in the spring it will preserve the deposit of [indecipherable] in the roots from being exhausted this is an experiment only do not adopt it in general
Government have it contemplated to institute a Botanic Garden at Ceylon upon a Liberal footing The salary I propose for the Superintendent is £300 a year if this is agreed to & I find the place such as is likely to enable the holder to save a decent sufficiency in his youth for the Comfort of a more advanced Person I mean to recommend you to the appointment
