Soho
To Mr Kerr  April 23  abstract

I have paid your salary of £110 [?] pounds into the hands of Mr Brown who supercedes your present chief & recommended you to his kindness & protection

Mr Aiton has written to you & told you the Particulars of your affairs here I need only say that we are well satisfied with your proceedings Kew Garden being testimony to your success with many fine Plants

The azalea indica you have often sent us has sometimes shewn signs of life after its arrival but has always died be so good as to be very attentive to send us more

If you try to cut these plants in vain after the Fall of the Leaf & prevent them from making many shoots in the spring it will preserve the deposit of [indecipherable] in the roots from being exhausted this is an experiment only do not adopt it in general

Government have it contemplated to institute a Botanic Garden at Ceylon upon a Liberal footing The salary I propose for the Superintendent is £300 a year if this is agreed to & I find the place such as is likely to enable the holder to save a decent sufficiency in his youth for the Comfort of a more advanced Person I mean to recommend you to the appointment

By Favor of Sir Geo Staunton
