His Majesty's Ship Porpoise
Simons Bay Cape of Good Hope
12th May 1806

Sir

I have just received an Order to report the State and condition of His Majesty's Ship Porpoise to you, which I would willingly fulfill if the rules of His Majesty's Naval Service authorized me so to do, but you being checked on this Ship's Books first on Admiralty leave, until the 2nd of March, when you came on board and took the Command;  but returning on board the Sinclair you was checked again the next day, since which time you have not been on board, of course not mustered, and although you landed yesterday as Governor Bligh;  the rules of His Majesty's Navy obliges me to look on you on Shore at Simon's Town Cape of Good Hope;  in a very different light to what I should at Port Jackson; where my Orders from my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty directs me to put myself under your Command - but sensible that the Service may suffer by any misunderstanding between you and myself at this time when no Senior Officer is on the Station to refer to;  I have only to request, if it is your determination
