compel him, & tho' I am really sorry for the change we must submit. I had form'd to myself a great Idea of the discoveries he wou'd have made, which will not now be explor'd in my Life time, Patience however is all that remains except that it shall be my duty to ward off all attack that may be made upon the office, by whom everything has been done which was right & proper, & more wou'd have been given I have no doubt, if I had sollicited for more indulgence.
I am however to apologize for the trouble I have occasion'd in consequence of my having put Confidence in this fickle Scotsman, my only excuse is, that he had fully consented to the letter I wrote to Mr. King, which he now acknow-
