Dear Sir

I received yours enclosing a copy  of your Letter to Mr Nepean
but I have not been at the Board since I shall later have to modify your orders as far as I am able to suit your wishes but I confess I have too much apprehensions of the dangers of Tracing a Reef  on the ocean side to mention such an Idea in the orders or claim with the sea right upon it & no anchorage is a danger I do not believe it has been usual for any necessity to encounter

The India Co have agreed & give £1200 for your Table & that of your officers but they decline any interference in the manner of guiding it which they leave to you, as far as I judge your Gunroom mess ought to be contented with what is allowed in India as better for the Gunroom mess & a [indecipherable] & the Rest considered as Table money for yourself & the 4 assistants that mess with you the gardiner & the miner if I am not mistaken your Gun room mess consists of  4 persons only. The real reason for the allowance is to  encourage the men of Science to discover such things as will be useful to the Commerce of India & you to find new passages
