S.S. [Soho Square] Decr 28  07

My dear Sir

Allow me to consult you as an old Friend very likely to be able to give me information of a nature that I know not how otherwise to procure on a subject on which I am inclind to take a considerable interest.

The Chapter of Lincoln who have hitherto exerted themselves on a manner honorable to themselves & satisfactory to the Laity in the Repairs & indeed in The improvement at the Cathedral  took upon them Last autumn to Remove Two Leaden Spires which had stood many Centuries on the Western Tower tho they were in good & sufficient Repair .

The Loss of these ornaments on which the whole neighborhood appears to have Set a considerable value has Causd a Spirit of discontent & of irritation to go abroad which seem intirely to have erasd from the Remembrance of the persons who are under its influence all remembrance of the Repairs & improvements which have been carried into effect by the very dean & chapter who have done this  what the public think unjustifiable.

I usd to be Calld upon by my neighbors in any public matter which as it Equaly Concerns every body is as the provost says nobodys business, I have been Calld upon to take some measures to ascertain whether by any Right interest in a chapter of Concerns originating in posession or otherwise they are Legaly able to destroy & Remove any part of the Cathedral Committd to their Trust.

in this need I Shall be very Thankful if I can be Favord with your opinion which is as you are likely to be well aware of all the bearings of the Question as I Observe a Leaden Spire similar to these at Lincoln which in my time usd to ornament the front of the Cathedral
