Sir

Your letter having been delivered to me in the countrey I was obligd to defer answering it till my return to town enabled me to apply to Mr Mello the Agent of the Duke of Brunswick

in answer to your question he informs me that the Duke has absolutely & repeatedly refus'd to pay the sum my demand on the professor & alledges for Reasons that the Professor did not include the sum owing to me in the List of his debts given in to that prince him now as the Professor has in that instance deceivd me & as I permitted him him to leave England without having given me the security I ask for merely on the faith of being included among the rest of his Creditors I desire that the proceedings against him at Halle may be carried on according to your original instructions

He tells me that having consulted the Magistrates & Lawyers of the university & that they have informd him that he cannot give the security I require, & states the reasons, now as every one of  those reasons are inequitable & directly contrary
