Sir
I am informed by a Letter from Mr. Archibald Menzies who was sent by their Lordship on board the Discovery for the purpose of investigating the natural history of the N.W. Coast of america that notwithstanding the unfortunate dispute that gentleman has had with his Commanding officer there are still many Plants living in the Plant glass Cabbin sent out for the Purpose of bringing home Plants for the Royal Botanic Gardens likely to prove extremely interesting both to the Science of Botany & to that of medicine.
I beg leave therefore through the medium of your good offices humbly to Sollicit their Lordships that Mr. Menzies who in Consequence of his being under an arrest Cannot leave the ship without their Permission may be allowd to attend the Plants from the Place at which the Discovery is orderd to Remain to the Royal Gardens in order that he may give the necessary instructions to Mr Aiton his majesties gardiner for their future Preservation & management.
Tho I Who have heard the statement of one of the Parties only in this unlucky business do not in any degree Pretend to be a judge of the merits
