Navy Office 15 Feb: 1805.
Dear Sir
I have receivd your Letter of the 13th instant respecting the deductions made at the Pay Office on account of Land Tax & Civil List, from the several Bills issued from hence for payment of the Men of Science who embarkd on board the Investigator, and am to acquaint you in reply that the first half years Salary being paid in full was owing to the amount being advanced to those Gentlemen and therefore entitled an Imprest from which no deductions are ever made, on Certificates signed by Lieut.t Flinders conformably to their Lordships order of the 15 April 1801 being sent from time to time to this Office, Bills were made out for the amount of the Salary that was due at the date thereof, their Lordships having so denominated the allowances directed to be paid consequently they were subjected to the same deductions as all other Salaries - had their Lordships directed the several Stipends to be paid in Reward for these Services, nothing would have been deducted -
In all future Bills made out at this Office the word Salary must be continued until directions are received from the Admiralty to the contrary, and upon their Lordships further signifying their directions the amount already deducted will be repaid.
I am Dear Sir
Your faithful humble Servant
A S Hamond.
The Right Honble Sir Jos : Banks B.t K. B.
