Of the Pot ash sent by Marshal Conway one hundred parts contain

Of Alk. Carbonated 78.9
Of Vil. Salt 13.4
Of Earthy Matter   7.7
  100.-
Of the Nit. Acid sent by Marshal Conway

One hundred parts contain - Of acid 80
Water 20

One hundred parts of this Potash require 123 of the Acid to make 111.5 of Salt Petre.

So long as Pot Ash is cheaper than Salt Petre in the proportion of 3 to 5 or in the proportion of 3 to any higher number, the expence of making Salt Petre in this way, will exceed the market price of Salt Petre by the price of the Vitriolic acid used in procuring the Nitrous Acid, and the workmanship in this process; and this extra expence will be about 3 pence pr. pound on the Nitre so manufactured, above the Market price of the imported Salt Petre.

In time of War Salt Petre is worth a Shilling pr. lb and then Salt Petre made with the Pot Ash & Acid would cost fifteen pence pr. pound;  if the price of Pot Ash were to rise;  but as the mere Alk: is about 2/3 of the Salt Petre; so long as the Pot Ash remains at the ordinary price, the expence of manufacturing Salt Petre in this way will not be near three pence pr. pound greater than the current price of the salt Petre.
