Copy of a letter from Vice Adml Dixon to Mr. Croker dated Rio Janeiro 1 Dec 1814.

Sir
Cap‛ Sir Thos Staines of H M S Briton having having reported to me that during his Cruize in the Southern Pacific he had fallen in with the Island named Pitcairn's, & landing thereon had discoverd the person named in the Margin, John Adams otherwise Alex Smith, who appears to be the only Survivor of the late Bounty's Crew, & that several of the descendants of Christian, represented as a very fine race of young men women & children, were residing on the same Island, under his patronage & care:  I consider it my duty to represent the same to you for the information of my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, & further to acquaint you that it appears from the report of Capt Tucker of the Cherub, that John Adams expressed his willingness to go with Sr T. Staines but that the descendants requesting he might be permitted to remain with them otherwise unprotected. Sir Thomas did not take him from the Island.

On the arrival of the Racoon from Valparaiso I expect a more circumstantial account of this very interesting & extraordinary discovery, which I shall lose no time in transmitting to you to be laid before my Lords Commissioners.

I trust their Lordships will approve of Sir Thos Staines's conduct in this matter, & of my waiting their Lordship's further directions thereon.
