[Page 3]

the whole of the wool obtaind by this new proces was returnd upon his head by his customers, who found it utterly incapable of being felted, but could not discover the reason, in truth each fibre when drawn by force from its seat in the skin, brought up with it a minute bulb, scarce visible with a high magnifier, but sufficient to render the hair fibre too blunt to move readily in opposite directions between each other, by which actions alone the intricate texture of felt can be produced

under this serious disappointment Mr Chapman has labord for  years & has had the mortification to see his moneyd neighbors grow rich in the exercise of the trade he himself originaly invented & in which they supplanted him while he has livd on the hourly fear of Bankrupcy, scarcely able to keep his family from want, he has seen the South whale fishers who had almost abandond the sealing business receive upwards of £200,000 in consequence of its being recovd by his discovery & he has seen the middling seal skins which he originaly purchasd for 2/- to 3/- each rise to the value of from 13/- to 14/- & the large ones worth from 20/- to 30/-
he verily beleives that in the last 9 years 40,000 lb. of seal furs prepard by his process has been annualy brought to market, by which the processes & the export trade has benefitted in a very extensive scale, as this quantity of fur, allowing one ounce for each hat, must have covered 4,480,000 sheeps wool bodies which without the covering of fur are not worth more than 2/- each & converted them into Fine Plates
