S.S. [Soho Square] May 6.

Revd. Sir

I have receivd a letter signed by a number of your Parishioners in which they request me to recommend you & your family to the Protection of the Lord Chancellor for an advance of Preferment.

I seriously wish Sir that my station of life was such as to put it into my power to interfere with propriety in the distribution of the Preferment which by the laws of the land is vested in the gift of that high officer & I hope is vested the care that I shall give particular consideration for the numerous persons in your Public whose income is inadequate either to recompence the expence of their education or to Provide for their Families that proportion of Comforts & Conveniences which were intended by the ancient Constitution of the Country to fall to the Lot of all who having been committed into holy orders were are in consequence entrusted with the Care of souls.

but that Sir is by no means the Case, my station that you & your Parishioners it may appear considerably elevated is in comparison to that of the Lord High Chanceler of Great Britain [?] is humble in the extreme & was I to recommend to him a person of whom I have no knowledge & with whom I have no connexion acquaintance, he would infallibly see me as impertinent intruder & the more especialy so as he has lately given me a living to a Person Clergyman whom I recommended on my personal knowledge of his good qualities, & having done this for me, to was I to ask for another favor probably during the whole time he may hold his office, he would with no reason no doubt consider me as making an unreasonable demand upon him to as he has so many persons beside those he wishes to oblige.

These good Sir are the reasons why I cannot undertake to recommend you to him & I hope you will not think them unsatisfactory.  I sincerely wish that your Future Fortune in Life may be better than your Past has been & beg leave to ascribe [indecipherable].
