Have some doubts of the fact of the OT [Otaheiti] Monarch being able to write.  I know that the Missionaries believe he can write & I attribute this belief on their part to the [indecipherable] of their [indecipherable] & the kindness of their dispositions unwilling to suspect deceipt in others as being incapable of Practising it themselves.  I have by me a letter from Pomaree [Pomare] to Govr. King which I have been taught & believe was written by a Profligate Englishman in his [indecipherable].
