Canton Decr 30th 1803

Dear Sir

I embrace the opportunity of a Danish Ship sailing for Europe to inform you of my arrival at Canton in a Merchant Ship the Rolla; finding that the Arrival of any King's Ship at Port Jackson became very doubtful, for various reasons I thought it necessary to embrace the first opportunity which might offer of returning to England with safety & dispatch.

In fact, I did not think it consistent with my Duty, to neglect the opportunity of coming home in the Rolla. In taking this Step I have the concurrence of Governor King.
