french have had good examples of this kind set them by us, & it would be a scandal not to follow them.  We shall all be anxious for this adventurous young man's return.  I expect much from Mungo Park's book. -

          We had here a most brilliant illumination on the Thanksgiving Day, & all went off with the same universal joy & good-humour that the illuminations on the King's recovery did in London.  It was an occasion on wch. there could be but one sentiment - & the conqueror too is our countryman.  My house was botanically in character with a profusion of Ruscus Androgynus at every pane, & it looked very brilliant. 

          I wish the papers I now send may stand the test of your botanical friends comparison of them with living Nature.  In science one must claim as well as give indulgence.
