Tragical hollow Silence answers, mockingly it seems.
Now one of the Gods is droning on  €“ "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help my God". The droning ceases. Witness for the prosecution in speaking and the God of Just Laws is writing. Will they never finish? Every word that is uttered pierces and burns his brain like a hot cinder. This suspense is horrible. He breathes hard. His collar seems suddenly to have tightened about his throat. He fingers it nervously, impatiently. But at last that damning voice has finished and he breathes more
