To night my little friend who has wished to give me a substantial birthday present has invited me to Opera Comique where one plays what is known [indecipherable] as Grand Opera which here is reserved for the Opera. The seats are excellent & cost only 10 fr but there is a box for poor, a war tax – a supplement – 2 fr for booking & in sum one pays 15 francs.

The theatre is like that at Bruselles – gilt everywhere Piece is Manon & some of singers are excellent though the best have left the city in this hot weather. It is like
