and which were principally sent to such of my friends or acquaintance as cultivated Botany as a science about two years ago. I sent Mr. Aiton for the Royal Gardens a large box, containing near 8 species of Orchidea nearly all new & many roots of each, what was their fate, I know not, as I have never heard anything more than of their arrival (thro' an indirect channel) I must therefore confess, that all these circumstances have very nearly disheartened me from making any more attempts to advance the knowledge of the Science by this method, and unless I can discover some channel thro' which I may be well assured my exertion will not be lost, I shall entirely give up any more efforts which may in like manner fail with thoseĀ I have already made. there are 2 or 3 periodical
