Sir.

     Since I had the honor of addressing you on the 20 November last, I quitted England, and on the 26th of the following month, safely arrived at this part of Brazil.  I now seize the first opportunity that has offered to communicate to you the commencement of my researches, as well as to touch on the subject of my last letter to you.

     My short residence here has convinced me, with pleasure and surprize, that every shadow of the obstacles which formerly existed against strangers travelling into the interior of this country, has now completely vanished, and it is almost a matter in course, for a Passport from one province to another being granted, provided that
