It is the highest land from Sidney to the Entrance of Port Stephens from which it is distant 6 Leagues. The intermediate space is a vast plain.

The Tide at the Entrance & in the harbour is strong, a velocity in some places from 4 to 5 Miles an hour. The ebb generaly stronger than the Flood. 

9 [H?] 45M is high water full & change rises 6 feet where the Lady Nelson anchord, fresh Water Bay & 4 feet when in the River along side Needle Island. The situation of the Harbour enables a Ship to be in Safety from whatever point it Blows & there is space for 100 sail. Plenty of Fresh Water on the North Side without other trouble than digging a hole 3 or 4 feet deep. There are three wells dug & the water is very good - on the South Side there are some rivulets of fresh water but of little consequence.

Coal is found on the South side of the main land calld Colliers Point & is also found on Coal Island it is got with great care & the more they approach the Level of the Water the better its quality. The same
