Director Yarmouth Roads
April 3rd 1790
My Dear Sir
We arrived yesterday from a Cruize off the Texel, where with four 64's and a Frigate we were sent under the Command of Captain McDonell. I understand we were ordered out, because The Admiralty from accounts they had received, supposed the enemy were preparing to sail. The whole force present consists of seven two-Deckers and 13 Frigates and Brigs. Sixteen sail, four of which are two Deckers, lie in the Mass [also spelt Maas] Deep, the others are in the New Deep. On a general field Day we saw 13 Ships & Brigs lose sails, and from thence I conclude the others were not so forward in their equipment. There were not above thirty sail of Merchantmen in or about the Place. Nothing certain can be said more about them, but it does not appear from any information, that they
