[com]mand my services during the Voyage which I should render as pleasant to him as he could desire. Be assured my Dear Sir I shall ever keep in mind your kind advice for I know well what power it will give me, and that dignity cannot be supported by ill nature. I think we shall do very well in this Ship and when we get to Sea, the Master will feel my value and continue the civilities he has power to grant me. I regret however I shall not arrive with any particular Boon to the Colony but my presence, that however with my actions, shall render them all the good I can, and with the Power I possess I shall not fear of exercising at my discretion whatever I think will ultimately tend to its comfort and stability. I have no doubt my representation of what I see necessary will be attended to, and perhaps that is expected before many things are arranged and directed to be done, which are already in contemplation: of all these circumstances you shall have a particular detail from me as soon as I arrive and see my way.
It would have been a melancholy thing if I had gone out without the Naval command, it would certainly have been better to have had no Kings Ship there, for I see that neglect & every evil would have attended it, but now altho they might have made me a Commodore & professedly called me Commander of the Ships & Vessels
