James Cook - A Journal of the proceedings of His Majesty's Bark Endeavour on a voyage round the world, by Lieutenant James Cook, Commander, commencing the 25th of May 1768 - 23 Oct. 1770

Manuscript written in the hand of Richard Orton, Cook's clerk, signed in full 'James Cook'. This appears to be the copy of his journal sent by Cook to the Admiralty from Batavia. The manuscript is divided into four books, with engraved charts of the voyage bound at the end of the journal. The journal starts on 27 May 1768, not 25 May as stated on the title page. In the Fourth Book, Cook added "a small Vocabulary of a few words in the New Holland Language which we learnt when in Endeavour River", August 1770 (2 pages).
