necessary reinforcements of both men and ammunition & food. Nobody knew or seemed to know the right thing to do. Perhaps it was the lack of initiative, of leadership. The English regiments were hopelessly late, & were badly managed, and instead of joining hands with the troops from Anzac on the night of Aug. 6 when all would have meant success. They were almost 48 hours overdue. But we could see them in broad daylight coming across the marshy salt lake in open formation & being soundly pelted with shrapnel.
