Quebec Nov:r 1st 1800

Sir

In answer to your letter dated March last I wrot [wrote] by way of N York. It gives me great satisfaction that my endeavours in this wild country meets with your aprrobation.  I mentioned some plans for the ensuing year one To proceed through the mountains of Virginia and down the Ohio to the Missisippi [Mississipi].  The other to get a Canoe & 4 or 5 Canadians & proceed up the Ottawa river and explore the South side of the great Lakes which to me seems the most elegable as I would be able to carry along with me what I collect.  I have consulted my N W friends here respecting the red River & the Missuri [Missouri] who say it would be extreemly [extremely] dangerous with out a large part as the Indians are very hostil [hostile].  But as Mr. Mackenzia [Mackenzie] is now on His way to England & promises to call on you he will be better able to inform you than I can.

I have shiped [shipped] on board the Montreal Capt: Bond a large Case containing Shrub & Herbs pached [packed] in Moss.  As there is no Convoy I thought proper to send the seeds & a few specimens by the Uretta by favour of Mr: Shaw a partner in N W Company.  You will find marked No. 21 a compleat Specimen & drawing of an aquatic plant which I suppose to be new the roots of which will be found in a Pot among the Moss.  It grows in standing water & at mudy [muddy] bottom.  I must beg Mr: Mathews's pardon for not sending him my accounts regularly but I shall set about it a [as] soon as I return to Montreal.  I have kept as much as possible within the sum allowed me the first year indeed was very expensive owing to my being taken by the french.  I should be glad to have your advice as to my proceeding next Summer.
