Letter received by Banks and Daniel Solander from Mr Motteux , 4 September 1773 (Series 06.173) - No. 0004

in question which as the use of such instruments is quite out
of the line of their researches they never had the good
fortune ever to hear of till this time.
They cannot help [comenting?] that Mr De Saulgy
has proceeded so far as he has without having previously
[acquainted?] either of them with his intention but hope that
that gentleman will place his disapointment to its real cause
[the] having too little [examined?] into the truth of the original 
report of their having advertised for the pendulumes which
as it is totaly without foundation they suppose would not
have born the test of much enquiry.
