Dear Sir

Since I heard of your intended voyage, many times wished for the possessing of those qualifications, which should enable me to engage, as volunteer, in so noble an expedition; that I might be of some help towards this attempt, and, if possible, perform as much in the service of England, as the brother of my fifth grandfather did in ye service of Spain: England being the only country I've chosen amongst others, did see in Europe, for the remaining part of my life, as Spain too had been for my said ancestor. 

However knowing well the deficiency of my habilities, thought improper to acquaint you till this moment with my above wishes. But hearing now the difficulties met with to find out some person, willing enough to undertake the astronomical and philosophical observations of your next voyage and my self being not intirily unacquainted with these matters, I take the liberty of opening my mind to you: and if approved of, on you pointing one interview, will be very readily waited on by
