Bounty St Helens [near Spithead]Dec 8th 1787
Dear Sir
I am again baffled in my second attempt to get down channel, and my People having severe colds has determined me to put back to this place as it is far better than if I put into any other this side of Plymouth, and I consider myself as forward in my Voyage without the risk of damaging the ship or hurting the health of my Men and Officers. The New Moon I hope will give us a change of Wind and Weather when I shall most chearfully set sail again.-I am Dear Sir Your most affectionateHmble servantWm Bligh
