Dear Sir

From the nature of your Letter I find it necessary to come to some explanation - in your original Letter to the Duke of Portland (if I remember right) 12.s pr Day and 100 Pounds for outfit was the encouragement offer'd on my arrival in London I found this reduc'd 10.s pr Day and no outfit - I declin'd the engagement, and I am far mistaken if any Plea was necessary to justify my Conduct. - pecuniary Concerns however contemptible in themselves arrive as a good criterion by which to estimate the importance or inability of any office or pursuit & tho my fancy had painted this as a Voyage of some Importance I found that Government consider'd it in a very different
