The deans or Karschines of Coreta, named Kackip Iwanow and Koreka Tekhew, declared that, in the year 1778, on the 11 of March, they departed from Ischukoyka, and, after passing several places, they arrived at last at the river Tetschitschewum. That, having crossed that river upon some Bandares, they reached the country of Ulussi Amuletowi, where they remained during the summer. That they learnt from the Ischukitschians who were there that their native country was called after their own dialect Ianeney, which meant in Russian from a similar stone or cape lying in the sea towards orient. That two vessels arrived there : the first, a three-masted one ; the second, a two-masted. That some people from these landed on the coast in gondolas, took a walk there, and enjoyed themselves with the Ischukitschians. That they presented the latter with folding Knives, and gave them some powder of tobacco (snuff). That the Ischukitschians, in return, treated them with food, viz., flesh of seal, dog-fish, and whale. That they smelt those aliments and did not eat of any, but they partook of some fresh young whale, some fish, and onions which were growing on the shore. That they treated the Ischukitschians with civility, but that they did not understand the slightest thing of what they were saying to one another. That the said vessels sailed away, doubled the cape, crossed the strait, entered the northern sea and steered towards the west to the island of Kulutschina, whence,
