Nevis, 28th May 1812 _
Sir,
I have taken the liberty of troubling you with an account, such as I have been able to collect, of the late dreadful eruption of the Souffriere in the island of St. Vincents', together with such other circumstances connected with it as appeared to me likely to interest you. This account together with some few specimens of the sand & ashes ejected from that Volcano, and one or two small fragments of opaline rock, partly in a state of decomposition, from the gut or ravine near one of our most remarkable Souffriere's upon the estate of I.H. Clarke Esq.r in St. Thomas's parish, I have inclosed in a pacquet addressed to Mr Fruling the Post Office, as I know not of any other mode whereby I was certain of your receiving it free of postage - In my label upon the specimen of ashes, which I have stated as belonging to a quantity which fell on board the ship Neptune of Bristol 500 miles to windward of Barbadoes, I find I have committed an involuntary error - I have had the pleasure since of a few moments conversation with Captain Tower, & learn from him that the specimen he gave me is part of a quantity which fell at Barbadoes, but is every respect similar to what fell upon the after part of his ship The Neptune, upwards of 500 miles to windward of Barbadoes, & consequently near 700 miles to windward of the Volcano - The quantity which fell
