A competent knowledge of the Botanic principles which he will make himself Master of will he Doubts not greatly tend to his improvement and will therefore not be neglected.
If there is any likelyhood of his being servicable to Mr. Banks he doubts not but he will at once perceive it and in that case it will be esteemd as a particular favour, if he will give some positive answer (in Writing if not too much trouble) in this matter and signify his Approbation or Disapprobation in a Day or two at least - If his Answer be that he approved the offer, the terms on which he is to with regard to the Emolument are desired -
I must needs own it is a degree of vanity in me to Desire to Attend you in your Expedition, when there are so many I doubt not highly superior to me in merit; that are desirous of obtaining the same honour but you will pardon my Presumption as I could not in justice to myself deprive myself of the Chance of that Advantage which must necessarily result to any Young person from a connection even of the most distant nature with Mr. Banks & Dr. Solander;
