My last letter to you was from Nootka in May last, by the way of Mexico, giving some account of our transactions from the time we left this country to that period, particularly of our reception in our second visit to the Sandwich Islands & of the means taken to revenge the cruel & horrid massacre of Lieut: Hergist [Hergest] & Mr Gooch.

On leaving Nootka we went to the Northward, & in a few days after joined the Chatham in Fitzhugh's Sound, near the place we left off the preceding season;  here we recommenced our examination of the Continental shore which was carefully pursued in boats through intricate branching channels to the Northwestward at no great distance from the exterior line of shore - every branch was traced to its termination & the boats in their way back always endeavoured to find out navigable passages by which the two Vessels moved on from Station to Station through narrow winding Channels among a numerous group of Islands the whole Summer;  till we came out to Sea on the 22nd of September last in the Latitude of 56o North where we brought the Continental Shore down to the Ocean. In this tract the Vessels passed behind Banks's Islands from which the Continent is not above five or six leagues removed, & from thence to the place where we left of, our examination was very interesting as being the situation in which the Spaniards in their later Charts place the famous Straits
