I forgot to tell you that our Commander has already perpetrated his name on the Coast, for the great Island we circumnavigated last summer of which Nootka is a part, is modestly named Quadra and Vancouver's Island tho' it should, I think, with more propriety be named after his Majesty as the name of King George's Sound is now extinct, which Capt, Cook first intended for him.

I have not yet been able to get plants to succeed, to my mind in the Frame on the Quarter Deck - for if it is uncovered in raining weather to admit air, the dripping from the rigging impregnated with Tar & Turpentine hurts their foliage & soil - and if the side lights are opened Goats - Dogs - Cats - Pigeons - Poultry &c &c are ever creeping in & destroying the Plants - I am now however contriving to pass a strong Net all round it in hopes with one attention it will answer better. -  Please present my compt  to Mr Aiton & his Family - Dr Smith - Mr Driander and the rest of my friends of the Linnean Society - I have the honor to be with due respect Sir Joseph
