Dr Sir

          I take the Liberty of writing to inform you of a Circumstance which would perhaps give you some Surprize to hear from any other Quarter - A Trial at our Assizes wherein yourself was Defendant - The Action had been commenced when I was last in London but knowing that a Suit at Law was no very pleasant Subject of Conversation, and myself being in Fact the responsible person it did not strike me then that it was necessary to acquaint you with the Case - which is as follows - In August last I issued a Warrant upon a Writ against a man of the Name of Darby a Miller at Helpringham - This Warrant was given to one Cropper a Bailiff at Heaford to execute which he did by informing the Defendant and taking 5 Guineas for not arresting him - Six Weeks after, the Warrant was taken out of this Bailiff's Hands and given to one Stredder another Bailiff, who arrested Darby, but he (Darby) thinking that as he had once paid for his Escape it was not at all agreeable to be taken to Gaol, - rescued himself - The return of the Writ was now passed, the Bailiff ruled me to return it and being then, only informed of the Rescue and having heard nothing of Cropper's Misconduct which was then a profound Secret I returned the Writ, of which I was perfectly satisfied, in formâ - Upon this an
