engraving recommended 2 books will accompany this the one consisting of uncolored engravings of the Plants each accompanied with Dr. Roxburghs description of its Parts & detail of its uses & the other of the same engravings Colored, it is hoped that the uncolored engravings will not be thought inelegant, they are cheap, they will prove as satisfactory to those who study Botany as more finished & consequently more expensive engravings & they have their great advantage, that the purchasers may cause them to be colored according to their own inclination, either in a slight or a more elegant, & consequently a more costly style, of which the Colored Book is a Proof.

Dr. Rupell Dr. Roxburghs predecessor as Botanist to the Company first suggested the idea of such drawings being published in Fasciculi or in a memoir addressed to Sir A Campbell & a Letter to the hospital board referred to in the General letter to England from Medics 2nd Decr. 1786 [indecipherable] to appear at stated Periods & Dr. Roxburgh who at his own expence has Furnished the Company with the drawings in question agrees with him Dr. Rupell in opinion, this no doubt is the most eligible Plan, Science will by that arrangement get early possession of a part of the work, instead of waiting till the whole is completed, the Company will spedily enjoy the credit due to them as Liberal Patrons of Science & the experiment of the Final success of the work will be seen tried & tried at a moderate expence.
