Sir,
I so much advise respect the magnificence of the Plan & ability of the execution of the vast undertaking at Cherbourg that tho I have ever held the opinion that the sea would ultimately triumph over the efforts of man however tho directed with the utmost ability skill of which humanity is capable I should long ago have presented myself there to admire & receive instruction had not my engagement here renderd even the short absence from home that would have occasiond incompatible with Propriety
By some mistake probably of our mutual friend Mr Bertholet [indecipherable] has been mentiond & I can not but think it a Fortunate one which he introduced me to the [indecipherable] of your correspondence it was my Friend
