This Letter was delivered to me by Capt Wolf on the 24 day of August a month at least after I had protested the bill.

Trincomalee Island of Ceylon
14th January 1809. -

Sir Joseph,

Imperious necessity. and in order to support my Wife in that Stile which becomes the relative of  Sir Joseph Banks has induced me to draw upon you for the Sum of One Hundred pounds by bill in favour of Mr Thomas Smith a Merchant residing at this place.  The Money has been laid out for the purchase of a House and a small piece of Ground for a Garden which was offered for Sail by George Kirby Esq.r Collector of the Customs &c &c permit me to assure you Sir Joseph, that the Necessity arrose from my not been able to procure a Comfortable dwelling for Mrs English who was brought to bed on the 22nd of last December of a very fine boy, and from the Circumstance of Government not allowing Quarters to Officers in this Island, I had not nor could not get a proper or Sufficent [sufficient] Loding [lodging] for Mrs. E. in her present situation - by the purchase I have made I have secured for my wife and boy
